Top 5 Ways To Kickstart Your Fitness Journey Today

Updated: May 7, 2021

Jump starting any fitness journey is a task in itself, but it can be a doable one if you can help yourself along the way.

This week on Top 5 Trending On The Trax, we are going to dive right into the top 5 ways you can kickstart your fitness journey today and stick with it for the long haul.

With Summer approaching fast, we all want to get into the best shape of our lives, but how can we? Here are the top 5 ways you can get going today.

1. Sign Up For An Event

Committing yourself to an event is one sure way to get yourself moving. Angela Duckworth, the Author of Grit writes about how, us as humans do not want to have unfinished business. By signing up and committing to a local 5k race, a Spartan Race, or even a fun online fitness challenge with Peloton or Garmin can be one way you put a date on the calendar and know you have some business to get to.

2. Set Yourself Up For Small Wins

“Small wins can lead to big changes”. This can’t be truer for when you want to get moving in fitness. By doing small things, such as doing 5 more pushups or squats then you did yesterday can lead to bigger goals down the road. Now, I am not sure if it was Confucius, Eric Thomas or even Will Smith, but someone has been quoted saying “a journey of a 1000 miles, begins with one step”

3. Commit To Yourself- Just One Day

Again, it comes up, Commitment. Can you commit to yourself? Just one day of extra activity? That is all it takes. One day on top of one more day and so on. Build your fitness journey in one day blocks. I once had a client start with ½ mile extra each day, which for her was just 5 minutes extra. Eventually, she turned that extra effort into one mile. Amazingly, after 365 days, she had completed doing just a little extra each day and lost over 60lbs and built confidence in herself that was unbreakable. By doing that one thing, day after day, like small wins, you can create a mountain from a molehill. Ahhh, Miley Cyrus… It truly is about “The Climb”.

4. Do Something YOU Enjoy

In todays fitness industry we are all pulled into doing the next best thing. Be it yoga, Pilates, Extreme Shred (does that even exist?) or some other sponsored Instagram ad fitness program. However, the truth is, unless you want to do it, eventually you will stop and fall back to old habits. So if you are just starting out with your fitness journey, do something YOU like, and NO, it does not mean you have to sign up for the gym or buy a $1000 piece of equipment, unless you want to. The one thing that needs to happen is that you must enjoy what you are going to do, whether its swimming, dancing, walking, geocaching (yeah, still haven’t done that) but you get the point. The more you enjoy the activity the better chance you will stick with it.

5. Grab A Friend

Now, I don’t believe I have many friends who would jump on this train with me, so this is a hard one and like me, you might be in the same boat. However, you would be surprised how many people you surround yourself with might be interested, but are afraid to get started. (Sound familiar?) Its why, you, after reading this blog, should get on the phone and text and see if your friend would be up to join you on a small walk, hike or even a 15 minute body weight workout in the backyard over some beers or wine. I know, I know this is a fitness blog, why am I telling you to drink and workout; well read tip number 2 (small wins). Start small, convince your friend to come for the drinks and maybe after a week or two, the drinks won’t be needed, but the fitness will be.
